Tools
- GLM-5.2 It’s an open weight model from Chinese company Z.ai. I have been experimenting more and more with cheaper Chinese models since Kimi 2.6 came out and have been really impressed with the quality for price. Try GLM-5.2’s take on my eerie solar system simulation concept.
- Gemma-4 Another model I have been playing with as a local model on my old laptop. Very cool (and slow) to use at the cottage with no internet to query random bits of trivia information. This is “roughing it” with AI in 2026.
Reading, Writing & Ideas
- Chris Arnade’s excellent review of Moby Dick.
- Command and Control. A very in depth review of control failures that led to the Damascus, Arkansas Titan II ICBM disaster. One of the scariest things I’ve ever read.
AI Stuff
- Ramp’s guidance on token routing. I love this article, points that resonated with me — A “good enough” model is sufficient for 80% of tasks, and measure outcomes instead of token usage. Basic stuff.
- Silicon Valley has much to learn from the spreadsheet jockeys it despises. AI implementation reckons with reality the second it touches a process that runs on firm tacit knowledge.
- Where do you fall on the AI compass? I am “The Optimist” which feels right. Not sure how I feel with the likeness to Pinker and Andreesen though.
